Critical Proposal for World Peace

                                      Byung Sun Soh

The tragedy of losing countless, innocent lives is ongoing, because of never-ending conflict and terror around the world.  Day by day, love is becoming barren, all the evil of society is skyrocketing, and day by day brutal acts of murder are only increasing in the four corners of the earth.

This is a tragic generation where humanity and ethics are collapsing, and day by day everything evil is mounting.  Now we hear the sighs from everywhere around the world!  A fearful world of evil running amok!

There will be no way to redeem the history of mankind, declining day by day, without developing fundamental measures.  This is because the most profound decadence of art was used, and opera has been stained with the evil of the whole world, for the past 400 years.  There have been times where I too have worshipped opera as the finest vocal art, and times where I have devoted all of my time and energy to opera study and performance.  However, contrary to my expectations, I became conscious of the evils of opera, and gained a sense of duty in guarding against such, and continue in this lonely effort.  It was in 1986 that I first sent out the theory on the harms of opera to 155 places around the world.

There was an influx of immense responses from everywhere around the world, including prime ministers of Germany, Australia, New Zealand, and South Korea. Veteran critic and winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Criticism, Donal Henahan, published the following essential statement, in the New York Times Music Section entitled ‘Opera as Godzilla’.

Thanks, also, to the “student of vocal music” who sent along a copy of his six-page, single-spaced history of opera, in which the essential nature of the whole genre is spelled out in such words as these: “Tragic modern developments such as love being the thing of the past, human life no longer respected and brutal killings of human lives all over the world are actually the results of our blind admiration for opera…. Opera, being the most falsely glorious music form, is flourishing only to exhaust human love, human sentiment and the human soul. Opera, in conclusion, is the most evil and brutal music form that has the most deceiving exterior. Opera, in the strictest, sense, is not classical music…. We have to destroy opera before it destroys us.”

I am grateful for all those who responded, and especially thankful to the New York Times.  I exclaimed “Yes! This is a great joyous occasion in the history of mankind,” as soon as I saw the statement printed in the New York Times.  The New York Times is a good newspaper that shines brightly, just like a lighthouse, on the history of mankind.

Let me examine in greater detail the extent of opera’s damage and my account of becoming aware of the evils of opera.

I was born and raised at the foot of a mountain in South Korea - a poor, small farming village.  This was a remote village, where there was no electricity, and no cars.  There was nothing to eat, and there were two occasions when I experienced the terrible pain of hunger, just like those splitting stomachaches when skipping meals. I was raised in a poor home with nothing so much as a radio, so I hardly had a chance to encounter music.  In high school, the music instructor suggested that I come check out the in-school music competition; receiving individual lessons was my first encounter with songs. I sang the Spanish song called “Ay Ay Ay!” and came in second place.

Subsequently, I was admitted to the College of Music at Seoul National University in 1965 after completing military service.  The majority of vocal music students at the time worshipped opera as the finest vocal art, and put their whole heart into opera.  Because I had a lack of knowledge of vocal music at the time, I followed everyone else, and devoted all my time to opera study.

Around my third year at the College of Music, I came to the United States in 1969 to study abroad.  I was admitted to Juilliard School as a scholarship student in 1970.  I was the oldest student to be admitted in the history of Juilliard School, being 32 years old at the time.  Upon completion of one semester, what I learned was the essence of vocal music art, including beautiful poems and the balanced melody of the art songs of Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, and Gabriel Fauré.  The majority of Korean vocal music students revered opera as the finest vocal art, spent all of their energy on just opera, were enthusiastic, and I became conscious of the fact that there was a stark contrast between the fact that these art songs were dismissed as incompetent individuals, and the academic atmosphere.  Upon arrival in New York, while frequenting the brilliant Metropolitan Opera House that I had longed for in my dreams, I watched famous operas many times.  However, as time went on, day by day I lost my admiration for opera.

Eventually, I came to believe that opera was only a glamorous sound that merely gave sensual pleasure, with no artistic value whatsoever.

At that time, I had met the global opera singer Tito Gobbi at the referral of an American couple, who had cherished my singing.  After listening to my singing, he said it was, “A very rare and beautiful voice,” and I was the first to receive a full scholarship in the 9 year history of “Tito Gobbi Opera Workshop,” which were held in Florence in Italy.  After thinking it through, I decided to go to Italy, the birthplace of opera, thinking I ought to truly understand opera.

Wherever you go in Italy there are statues and sculptures lined up on every street, and the public buildings and private homes alike are beautiful, long-time works of art.  At lunch time, the sound of beautiful singing flowed out of every restaurant.  The majority of Italians are passionate fans of opera.

While I was staying in Italy, I came to know that the most of the residents were passionate, and had no patience.  I began to have some doubts.  Why was it that the Italian people, in this country of art, have no patience and are so emotional?  How, in Italy, the country of art, was the frightening organized crime mafia able to emerge?  How are the people of Germany, France and England, neighboring countries with the same cultural level?

The people from these countries are regarded as being patient, earnest, and intellectual. How could Italian people be so different from their neighboring countries in Europe? In Germany, France, and the United Kingdom, art songs are widespread mainly because perseverance, intellect, simplicity, love and other qualities, which underline song music, comprise the social fabric of those nations. However, in Italy, there are no art songs. Most Italians flock to operas. Lyrics define song music. The artistic value of song music is determined by its lyrics.  "Artistic" song music enlists beautiful prose written by Heinrich Heine, Goethe, Verlaine, Baudelaire and other esteemed poets. On the other hand, the lyrics in most operas center on jealousy, violence, adultery, cruelty, murder, passion. This fact alone gives a hint on what value opera music holds.

Enrico Caruso, one of the most famous operatic tenors in the history of opera music, is worth examining. Baker's Biographical Dictionary of Musicians describes his life thus:

His private life was turbulent; his liaison (never legalized) with Ada Giachetti, by whom he had two sons, was painfully resolved by court proceedings in 1912, creating much disagreeable publicity; there were also suits brought against him by two American women. In 1906, the celebrated “monkey-house case” (in which Caruso was accused of improper behavior toward a lady while viewing the animals in Central Park) threatened for a while his continued success in America. On Aug. 20, 1918, he married Dorothy Park Benjamin of New York, over the strong opposition of her father, a rich industrialist.

His sounds were mostly made in the service of high passion, violence, and cruelty.  He particularly shined in his leading operatic roles in the verismo operas Otello, Tosca, and Rigoletto, which are laden with violent and cruel themes. These operas were loud, extravagant, barbaric and passionate, and when combined with Caruso's manly and powerful voice, they became great operatic performances, catapulting Caruso into the limelight as the preeminent opera singer. This is the lifecycle of operas. While listening to Caruso's performance, the underlying violence, cruelty, and passion in the lyrics creep into the mind of the listener subconsciously and thus, Caruso and verismo opera have inflicted immeasurable damage to the human psyche this way. In all verismo opera performances, the more passionate it is sung in a violent way begets a more satisfying and stimulating pleasure.

The operas that the comparatively emotional Italians enjoy are verismo operas, and because only such verismo operas are performed in Italy, I arrived at the conclusion that it was because of opera that the frightening organized crime mafia emerged.  What actually happened is that each time there was a decline in mafia morale, they would come to the opera house to recover their morale, and such facts lend credence to this reality.

At this time, the country which is the biggest victim of opera is Korea.  Opera is composed by Westerners, having large stature.  For opera there must be the loud sound of orchestra accompaniment and ensemble in thousands of opera houses.  Because there formed a group of Westerners with large stature and loud sound, some difficulties were encountered, leading sometimes to cases of adjourning performances.  Moreover, the weak Korean people were really hurt having small stature and a soft sound.  It meant that there was the sound of desperately trying to make a sound with the muscles around the neck during successive rehearsals so as to perform opera pieces.  Because of this, the natural, pure, beautiful sound of a natural instrument was lost on me.  Such hurtful sounds made it that beautiful poems which must be delicately sung could not be done well, thus this was also a big cultural loss.  This is the harm suffered by almost every Korean singer who sing opera. It is standard that art songs of Schubert, Faure, Brahms…

should be sung in a about 6 hundred seated theatres accompanied by piano.

Currently, there is overwhelming excitement of opera all over Korea.  There is no place without an opera in each city.  When you go to opera performance halls, they are mostly filled with middle or high school students. The performers were luring the students they were teaching at the schools to filled up the theatre.  The students had no clue what opera was, and were just sacrificial lambs brought it to fill the places.  The simple-hearted and pure youth have long been fed the uncivilized sound of lamenting of the most foul lyrics such as of passion, cruelty, adultery, and murder.

Where are such a people that would not listen to such uncivilized lamenting, and have passionate, lively sounds coming from the television and radios, even if it wasn’t the opera house, in the situation where the passion of opera was spreading throughout Korea.  The wave of opera was amplified by worldwide opera stars visiting Korea often.  The famous tenor Pavarotti visited Korea a few times.  Each time he came the Olympic stadium was filled with a tens of thousands of people, even though the price was high, and the press, whether on television, radio, or in the newspaper, highly promoted this performance.  Each time he came, the wave of opera increasingly covered Korea.  Apart from this, José Carreras, Plácido Domingo, and other famous opera singers visited Korea

frequently.

Each time, the music hall filled with audiences, and the opera wave was sweeping all of Korea.  These were all verismo opera singers, with loud, and lively and most-passionate sounds, and they gave the audience their fill of the most barbaric sounds, that were not cultural but were of passion, and cruelty. Could the famous opera singers such as Caruso, Callas, Pavarotti, and Domingo sing the art songs well, just as they do opera?  It is impossible.  Art songs are songs that have a sense of value, and can be sung only if one has intellectual character. Their sounds are so passionate, and so they cannot sing art songs well because their sounds are not suitable for art songs.  Until now, the energy of evil gushing from opera is thick like a fog over Korea.  Because there are big orchestra accompaniments in theatres with thousands of seats for opera events, the lyrics are not conveyed at all, and anti-cultural events are continually promoting vanity and extravagance, because of this ignorance.  Therefore, the country is being filled with corruption, and morals and ethics are giving way, and the result of having the world’s highest divorce and suicide rate has been no coincidence.  Recently, the horrible tragedy of the Sewol ferry occurred, where 304 high school students lost their lives as they went under the sea.  This tragedy was brought about by the poor state of honesty, due to the lack of a moral culture.  The state of things is that a second, and third tragedy will likely occur, if there is no restoration of honesty, by way of cultural dissemination.

While there is the flood of various types of cultural events in the country, along with the growth of the Korean economy, the majority are types of growing provocative pleasures and decadent entertainment, and actually it is the case that there is the crisis of the absence of a moral culture.

If we listen to the art songs of those such as Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Fauré, we encounter the artistic essence of patience, simplicity, honesty, intelligence and love.  However, I came to know that all of opera is just artful songs that give stimulating pleasure, though they are flamboyantly beautiful, and that it is songs lacking any honesty whatsoever.  As well, there is a downfall of the opera that was performed lively by a large orchestra in the large theatre of thousands of seats, to songs that give stimulating pleasure, and are ignorant of any sort of truth.

I think that High C is the height of stimulating pleasure that is the purpose of opera.  I went to go see the performance of Pavarotti for myself.  He held with a loud sound a lively High C, and the entire theatre became wildly excited in an instead, and the bravo sound reverberated.  That was the moment that opera, with the purpose of stimulating pleasure, reached attained its peak.  Can this stimulating pleasure and wild excitement sublimate us and purify out emotions?  The High C was not like a lullaby, and was not a loving sound, and was not a sound of art calling conveying a beautiful creation.  In conditions of intense stimulation, there is the most passion from the need to struggle, and the most barbaric, lamenting sound.  If such a barbaric High C is done well, one becomes the king of High C, and becomes dominant as the supreme star of the opera world, and there is the sense that this type of opera is nothing other than barbaric music.  This is the rational response of study.

Pavarotti became the king of High C by singing the High C well, and reigned as the most supreme opera star in the world.  He abandoned the raising of his 5 children, and his wife who had dedicated her life to helping with his activities, and while living with his 25 year old female secretary, conceived a love child.  He is an adulterer who had deserted grace, and betrayed ethics.  Going wild about the singing of an adulterer and giving him applause is an act of sabotaging ethics, and forgetting reason.  There can be no justification here whatsoever.  For all art, while the audience can only be touched by the beautiful personality of the performer, the violent and barbaric personality in opera is a condition of the opera star betraying the creation of art, even if they have a strong and loud sound.  When admiring Libretto or movies as fiction that are used in opera, while the artistic intent of good triumphing over evil does live, in opera, with the purpose of enjoying lively sounds and stimulating pleasure, if there is a lively sound, even if it is the evil song of a murderer, applause is given and evil is enjoyed; and if the sound does not come out good, there is a heckling of the good and jealous that is most barbaric, and it is the most evil music.  The worldwide murderer Hitler was an opera fanatic, and spent his whole life enthusiastic about opera.  While he was enthusiastic about opera, it is a fact that mankind suffered a great deal, and this was because his heart became stained with qualities of opera such as deception, passion, violence, and cruelty.  If he had loved the

songs like Wild rose by Schubert, Lullaby by Brahms ,Songs my mother taught me by Dvorak and other true love songs as much as opera, would he have become the murderer of the century?

The classic statement of this critical attitude is Saint Évremond’s definition of opera, in The Harvard Dictionary of Music, as “a bizarre affair made up of poetry and music, in which the poet and the musician, each equally obstructed by the other, give themselves no end of trouble to produce a wretched result.” Worldwide intellectuals and scholars have said the same things.  They sigh, “How can opera, wearing colorful clothes, and just letting out the sound of barbaric lamenting, be called ‘art’?”  We must listen to what scholars and intellectuals say.  This is because they have a conscience in being focused on the history of mankind.  Again, I emphasize my academic opinion, without the slightest fault, without much of a process by the theory on the harms of opera.  I am sincere about the culture of mankind, and world peace.

Opera is the con artist of the century!  For the past four centuries it has used the skin of the greatest arts, and by staining the world with evil, it has brought about a terrifying world where love is being exhausted, and there are barbaric acts of murder in places around the world.  This type of opera, an evil being cruel and barbaric, is still passing itself off as a supreme art.  This is an insult and disgrace of the wisdom of mankind.  This is an insult and disgrace of the history of mankind.

There are several performance halls at the Lincoln Center in New York. It is a truly a beautiful place.  Situated at the center is the brilliant Metropolitan Opera House.  People are overwhelmed by their dignity, and opera seems to be proclaiming itself to be the greatest synthesis of art of all the arts.  I think the Australia Opera House, La Scala Opera House, Vienna State Opera House, and Covent Garden Opera House would all have a similar atmosphere.

With their reputation as the most splendid halls for comprehensive art, these venues provided glamorous stages for performers to come into the light as world-class opera singers, paying them high fees.  These are the stages from the dreams of worldwide vocal students, and opera reigns as the supreme art, and has the role of overwhelming the entire world.

What kind of cultural impact have such glamorous art centers had? What songs are being sung in the most euphoric of the world’s art halls? Is the beautiful poetry of the great poets, Heine, Goethe, Verlaine, and Baudelaire being sung? No, the world’s most vile lyrics – of high passion, violence, cruelty, adultery, murder, and curses – are being sung.  When loud and splendid sounds emanate from their splendid stages, applause is given, and evil is enjoyed, even if it is the evil song of a murderer; and when loud and splendid sounds emanate, applause is given and evil is enjoyed, even if it is the song of an adulterer, and morals are destroyed.  When the splendid sounds are made, these are the most passionate, the most violent, the most barbaric lamenting sounds, and even so, applause is given, and it is enjoyed, and this is the cradle of evil, paralyzing and exhausting morals. The American Opera Center, which did not exist in 1970 when I first entered The Juilliard School was established in 1972,starting a new trend among musical institutions to open an opera department of their own. Now, almost all music schools

around the America have their own opera courses. Now opera overwhelmed all over

America.

Evil spirits  of opera already spread out all over the  America like a fog !

Evil spirits of opera already spread out all over the whole world like a fog!

This is a critical situation !!

Opera must be destroyed !!!

This is the most critical cultural movement transforming from a terrifying world where

evil swaggers, to a world of peace, where the true love of mankind flourishes.

This is the most critical world peace movement, and the most urgent in transforming

the dark world where the ethics and morals of mankind have collapsed, to a world

where morals shine brightly.

We cannot be spectators as the history of mankind declines day by day. We all have to

work together for world peace. All nations should teach nursery songs at nursery

schools and classical music, art songs, literature and great individuals at elementary

schools, middle schools and high schools. We have to make great revolution for human

spirits through school educations. These would be the most important and most ideal

way for the everlasting world peace.

New York Times Music Section  Opera as Godzilla

Thanks, also,to thestudent of vocal music who sent along a copy of his six-page single-spaced history of opera,in which the essential nature of the whole genre is spelled out in such words as these:Tragic modern developments such as love being the thing of the past, human life no longer respected and brutal killings of human lives all over the world are actually the results of our blind admiration for operaOpera, being the most falsely glorious music form,is flourishing only to exhaust human love, human sentiment and human soul.Opera,in conclusion, is the most evil and brutal music form that has the most deceiving exterior.

La Scala Opera House, Covent Garden Opera House, Vienna State Opera House,Australia Opera House
