한국전 정전 56주년 기념행사 DC에서 열려

한국전 정전 협정 56주년을 기념하는 한미 합동 행사가 7월 27일 오전 워싱턴 D.C. 한국전기념공원에서 열렸습니다.

이날 행사에는 한덕수 주미 대사, 국가보훈처 관계자, 에릭 신세키 보훈부 장관 등 한미 양국 관리들과 대한민국재향군인회 미동부지회 회원들, 한국전 참전 용사들이 참석했습니다.

한덕수 주미대사는 행사에서 인사말을 통해 “오늘 우리는 한국전에 참전했던 분들을 기리기 위해 모였다”면서 “이들의 희생 덕분에 오늘날 한국의 민주주의가 번성하게 되었다”고 강조했습니다.

한 대사는 또한 “오늘 여기에 있는 참전 용사들과 집으로 돌아오지 못한 분들도 모두 영웅”이라면서 “한국 국민과 정부는 항상 이들 영웅에게 감사하고 있다”고 말했습니다.

그는 이어 “이명박 대통령과 오바마 대통령은 지난달 정상회담에서 한미동맹의 미래를 위한 공동 비전을 채택했다”면서 “우리는 흔들림 없는 양국 유대가 한국전 참전용사의 용감한 희생 덕분이라는 점을 결코 잊지 않을 것”이라고 언급했습니다.

행사에 참석한 에릭 신세키 미 보훈부 장관은 기조 연설을 통해 “자유는 공짜로 주어지는 것이 아니다”는 격언을 인용하고, “자유는 지난 날 조국을 위해 지켜 낸 수많은 희생의 대가임을 우리는 기억해야 할 것”이라고 강조했습니다.

신세키 장관은 “한국의 민주주의는 60년 전 자신의 고귀한 목숨까지 희생한 분들에 의한 것”이라며 “그들의 희생에 진심으로 감사한다”고 말했습니다.

특히 올해 정전협정 기념 행사는 최근 ‘한국전쟁 참전용사 인정법안’이 미국 상ㆍ하원에서 통과된 데 이어 버락 오바마 미국 대통령이 지난 24일 포고문을 발표, 7월 27일을 ‘한국전쟁 정전 기념일’로 지정하고 모든 미 연방정부 기관에 조기를 게양하도록 지시함에 따라 그 의미가 더욱 깊었습니다.

식전 행사로는 국제평화합창단과 판소리팀 소리샘이 공연을 통해 한국전 참전 용사들을 추모하고 정전협정 56주년을 기념했습니다.

한편, 이날 오후에는 알링턴 국립묘지에서 한국전 참전용사들을 기리는 헌화식이 있었습니다. 한국전참전용사정전위원회 J. 모버트 레이너 회장은 인사말을 통해 “일부 미국인들은 한국전쟁에서 미군이 많은 희생을 해 한국이 미국에 빚을 지고 있다고 생각하지만, 그것은 진실이 아니다”면서 우리는 하나이며 자유와 민주주의를 위해 다 함께 싸웠습니다. 오랫동안 지속되고 있는 동맹 덕분에 한미관계가 갈수록 좋아지고 있다”고 말했습니다.

Korean War Veterans Armistice Day

Secretary Shinseki, Director Smith, Deputy Superintendent Lorenzetti, honored veterans of the Korean War,

and our friends from all the countries that fought together during the Korean War, Thank you very much for coming here this morning.

Today we are gathered to remember and honor the men and women who served in the Korean War – those whose sacrifices made possible the thriving democracy that Korea is today.

Through much hardship, suffering and loss – they endured, and they never gave up.

Their courage and sacrifice were simply heroic. The veterans who are here today, and those who did not come home - they are heroes.

And the people and the government of Korea are always grateful to these heroes.

The hostilities were terminated by the Armistice agreement 56 years ago, but North Korea still poses a threat to the international community.

We are patient and consistent in our demand that North Korea give up its nuclear program and return to the table for dialogue. Korea and the United States are working closely together in this respect.

Last month, President Lee and President Obama met here in Washington D.C. The Summit underscored that the relationship between our two countries is strong, vibrant and dynamic.

The two leaders adopted the Joint Vision for the Alliance, setting out the goals of our future-oriented Alliance.

We will never forget that this unshakeable bond between our two countries stems from the brave service of the Korean War veterans.

We are always cognizant of the fact that democracy and prosperity of Korea today would not have been possible without their sacrifices.

And I promise you here that we will always remember that.
