Korean Dance Performance to be held at Washington Dulles International Airport in celebration of Lunar New Year

On Monday, January 16, 2009, the KORUS House of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, Korean Air, and Washington Dulles International Airport will be sponsoring a Korean traditional dance performance in celebration of the Korean Lunar New Year.

The performance, which will take place at Washington Dulles International Airport in Chantilly, Virginia, will first begin at 10:30 a.m. at the Korean Air boarding gate B-32, and a follow up performance will begin at 12:00 p.m. at the top of the escalator on the second floor, near the security checkpoint.

The featured performers will be local Korean dance and music artists of the Asian-American Arts Center, who will be demonstrating a variety of Korean traditional performance arts, including the fan dance, the drum dance, among others. The performers will be lead by Asian-American Arts Center Director Soon-hee Seo, and each of the performances will last roughly 35 minutes each.

The Korean New Year, or Seollal as it is known in Korean, is reserved on the first day of the lunar calendar, which falls on the 26th of January this year on the Gregorian calendar. While the Gregorian New Year's Day is still reserved as a federal holiday in Korea, it is during seollal that families make it a point to gather from far and wide to celebrate and honor the traditions of the New Year.

Seollal is considered to be the most important and significant holiday for the Korean people, who historically celebrated the holiday by congregating with all the village neighbors to eat, play games, and pay respect to the elders. Today, despite the everyday use of a solar calendar in Korea, seollal is still celebrated more widely than its solar counterpart, though in a more intimate, familial setting.

In celebration of this significant Korean holiday, the KORUS House of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, Korean Air, and Washington Dulles International Airport have sponsored this event to provide the members of the Washington DC metropolitan community with an opportunity to experience Korean culture.
