Along with the fall harvest celebration of Chuseok, one of the two most important traditional Korean holidays of the year is the Lunar New Year, known as Seollal. Like Chuseok, Seollal is a joyful occasion for families to reconnect in their hometowns, pay their respects to one another, enjoy traditional activities and food, and catch the first sunbeams of the New Year. In 2010, Seollal officially falls on Feb. 14.

To mark the occasion, the Korean Embassy’s KORUS House welcomes the Washington DC-area community to join its ever-growing family for a Seollal celebration on Monday, Feb. 8, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. The event, free and open to the public, will include a Korean cooking demonstration and tasting with chef Chang Jae Ok, modern and traditional Korean dance performances, traditional game activities such at Yutnori, and a crafts workshop and exhibition with master artist Kim Kyung Hak, featuring Korean masks, kites, and woodblock printing.

This KORUS House event is being held in partnership with the Korean American Cultural Arts Foundation and the Korean American Association of Southern Maryland, and is made possible with the sponsorship of the Maryland State Arts Council.

This event is free and open to the public, but an RSVP is required to attend.
