Asia's Biggest Pop Music Festival Kicks off in Seoul

Asia's largest music festival, the Asia Song Festival, is to take place at the Seoul World Cup Stadium and World Cup Park from Oct. 3 to 5.

The annual festival, which began in 2004 to create a cultural community in Asia through pop music, is back for its 5th season with about twenty teams of star performers representing twelve Asian countries, including Japan, China, Taiwan, Thailand, and Korea.

It is a perfect place to be, whether you are a local or visitor, as long as you adore Asian pop stars.

On Oct. 3, new faces that hold the future of the pop scene in Asia will perform in a free concert. This concert featuring rising Asian pop stars will be held at the Peace Plaza, near the World Cup Stadium.

Performers include Korean boybands SHINee, 2PM and U-Kiss, Japanese girl group Berryz Kobo, Yoga from Taiwan, Peck from Thailand, BX from Mongolia, Rynn Lim from Malaysia and Jocie Guo Mei Mei from Singapore.

A highlight will be when SHINee, a five-member Korean music band, and Berryz Kobo, a girls' pop group from Japan, are awarded the “Asia's Best New Artist,” a prestigious prize handed out to only one or two new artists whose popularity has been particularly explosive.

On Oct. 4, the Asia Song Festival will reach its climax with the main concert being held at the Seoul World Cup Stadium, featuring performances by Korean stars TVXQ, Shin Seung-hun and Girls Generation; Taiwanese group Fahrenheit; Japanese singers Anna Tsuchiya and w-inds; Hong Kong star Karen Mok; Rivermaya from the Philippines; and Ice, Thailand's top boy idol singer.

Agnes Monica from Indonesia, a top Indonesian woman singer nicknamed “the Britney Spears of Southeast Asia” will also perform.

During the festival, each participating country will set up music booths in the outdoor exhibition area of the World Cup Stadium Peace Plaza where visitors can watch the latest music videos and gain an understanding of the pop music scene in various Asian countries.

In addition, the Asian Music Industry Leadership Forum, in which major executives of Asia's foremost record labels and agencies are to discuss the Asian music scene and fan meetings, will also be held as part of the Asia Song Festival.

The event is free of charge. Admission tickets can be received at the stadium upon presentation of coupons that are downloadable from the Asia Song Festival website at http://www.asf.kofice.or.kr/l_eng/index.php (This is an English version of the site, but Korean, Chinese and Japanese are also available).

The Seoul World Cup Stadium is located near World Cup Stadium Station on Subway Line 6.
